I pretty much always use at least a tarp under the Coleman tent and when I don’t have a tarp or mat to set it on I make sure to remove any large or sharp rocks before I stake it down. I can only speak from my experience with this tent but so far it’s held up very well. It’s mostly because of how the tent is built and this isn’t a problem that’s specific to just Coleman, lots of pop up tent brands have this exact problem. It can be done but there’s a lot of strain on the zipper and the seams around it.
On that same note, the Coleman 2 man instant tent will not fit a queen size air mattress, you will have to get the 4 person version for that. I highly recommend Coleman instant tents and I still use my little 2 person one to this day. Like most 2 person tents this instant tent is very lightweight and super portable.
The packed size of the Coleman six-person tent is about 48″ x 9″. The expandable carry bag comes with a rip strip that helps reduce the packed size and make it easier to store away. You still have to stake the tent, then equip the rain fly over the top of the tent. If you make this a two or more person job, you’ll speed things along, but it’s still not a long setup process. In some tents, condensation can build in the cold and rain as vents are covered by the additional rainfly or windows are closed to stop the rain coming in. You can also nap during the day to recharge for all your outdoor adventures. You’ve got 68D polyester fabric, which has double the thickness than regular kinds. The floor is extremely durable and thick, made from 1000D polyethylene. With the innovative WeatherTec System, things are kept dry inside and leaks are prevented. Firstly, you have the inverted seams, where the stitching holes are protected from moisture to avoid seepage.
When not in use, simply fold and tie the curtain back so you’ll have a more open feel. These windows are so great that you can use this tent as a sunshade on a beach or at home in the garden. But they will not perform great in the case of the rain and wind combined. Observe that when it is raining, you can still set this tent and its interior will coleman ice chest not become wet in the process; everything is already closed inside. Now compare this with a typical two-layer tent; everything inside will become soaked with water before you attach the rain fly. If you have ever done this, you will know what I am talking about.
But even if you do have to buy the extra rain fly, this is still not an expensive tent. Check out the price and decide for yourself if you think it would give you enough bang for your buck. Since this has a freestanding frame, you can set it up indoors. It doesn’t need to be secured down if the weather isn’t too windy, so you can install it on any flat surface – even in your own living room. In just one minute, you can have this tent up, with a few extra minutes left to secure it down with the guylines and stakes. An affordable and functional instant tent, perfect for entry level and occasional campers.
If you are planning on doing some full winter camping I would suggest getting a more specialized tent for winter camping. I’ve used mine in a few rainstorms and there was even a little flooding, everything inside the tent stayed nice and dry. There is also a small mesh panel on the roof under the cover so you can see the stars at night. It weighs around 4 lbs so it’s very portable and easy to carry around. The Abco is a very simple pop up tent that is more of a rectangle shape than the Coleman.
