To test that out, I took the Roomba Combo J7 Plus home, where I have a mix of carpets and hardwood floors. It did a great job of identifying carpeted areas during its initial mapping run — from there, I never caught it vacuuming those carpeted areas without lifting the mop up and out of the way first. It’s just a better, more high-end approach to automated mopping, and one you won’t need to think about quite as much. So, I mentioned that the otherwise excellent doesn’t include mopping capabilities. Enter the Roomba Combo J7 Plus (emphasis mine), which adds that talent to its skillset. That way, it’ll never drag a wet, dirty mopping pad across your otherwise freshly vacuumed floors as it cleans.
Keep in mind that you can’t use interactive mapping features without an internet connection. We measured the volume on the bot’s maximum suction setting and found that it was just 57 dBc, a full 5 decibels quieter than the Roomba 694—that’s a major difference. On its normal suction setting, the 11S operates at just 53 dBc, sounding more like a fan than a vacuum cleaner (traditional vacuums are often 70 dBc or louder because of their much stronger suction). And since the 11S stops short of most obstacles, it avoids creating many of the bonking impact noises that the rougher Roomba 694 makes. Other basic Eufy models have slightly stronger suction and can be a couple of decibels louder, but they are still quieter than most competitors.

Much of this technology is based on machine learning, a technique that uses large troves of data—including our voices, faces, homes, and other personal information—to train algorithms to recognize patterns. The most useful data sets are the most realistic, making data sourced from real environments, like homes, especially valuable. Often, we opt in simply by using the product, as noted in privacy policies with vague language that gives companies broad discretion in how they disseminate and analyze consumer information. Just about the only quibble I have is that the self-emptying function doesn’t always work reliably—I do end up checking it after every run, just to make sure it hasn’t gotten clogged.
You can easily find one that does exactly what you need it to do at a price range that is affordable to you. As it turns out, both Roomba and Shark offer 11 models and variations. They can even move to their recharging bases and beacons on their own. Other models allow you to be able to customize and reprogram them to avoid certain areas. The brushes are small and generally about 5 to 8-inches long depending on the model. Roomba also has a multi-pronged brush that will move debris toward the cleaning head.
