I like that the Alvantor Screen House folds down flat so it’s easy to lay flat on other gear or store in a narrow space. Finally, this shelter features a very fast setup (60 seconds). If you’re taking a camping trip with a small group, the Coleman Instant Screen House Canopy Tent is a great choice.
Like the REI model, the L.L.Bean tent has ample interior pockets, a lantern hook, and a roomy carrying bag, though the bag is of the typical drawstring-sack variety. The whole thing, bag and all, weighs 14 pounds. Several REI reviewers who bought both the tent and the fly for rain protection note that the fly has only two walls, leaving much of the tent exposed. ozark trail canopy The add-on fly for our runner-up pick, the L.L.Bean Woodlands Screen House, offers four-walled protection, though it’s also more than twice as expensive. Our favorite of the eight canopy tents we tested, the REI Co-op Screen House Shelter ticks all those boxes. However, it isn’t meant as a place to sleep; for that you should choose a regular car-camping tent.
All these terms get intermingled when talking about screen houses, but there’s a big difference between a screen house and a tent. And unlike many other screen shelters, this one pops up in under a minute for last-minute use. The outer material is UV sun-protected, and there are large mesh windows for ventilation. And the bottom of the tent comes with an extra-wide skirt to keep bugs out (which, let’s be honest, is the main reason people buy screen houses). The Coleman 15 × 13 Instant Screenhouse is essentially a larger version of the Coleman 10 × 10 Instant Screened Canopy, and it has similar shortcomings. The sloping walls make the interior space feel much smaller than the generous footprint might lead you to expect.
It occurred to me that if I insist on inviting people into a blazing Mojave inferno in the height of the summer it would be polite to provide some shade. Shade can be a matter of survival there if you’re outside at midday. Then I started ozark trail canopy having other wild fantasies, like effectively adding a room to the desert shack where I live by erecting the shadehouse in the backyard. During the winter and early spring of 2017, we added four more canopy tents to our testing lineup.

An absolute waste of money and time, and cost plenty of aggravation. Never got it out, went to use it yesterday and the kit for set up is totally wrong. When I got the thing home and deboxed it, the reality began to set in. Dozens of two-foot sections of pipe spilled onto the floor with stickers labeling them ‘1B’, ‘4’, or ‘2B’. Childhood memories of failures with Tinker Toys came flooding back. But, with determined hope, I began to wade through the instructions.
Fellow campers and sun-baked spectators consistently gravitated toward the REI shelter over the L.L.Bean. Though the two tents have the same footprint, the REI’s roof is 6 inches taller; we found that the higher ceiling made the REI shelter feel significantly roomier inside. The six-pole structure is intuitive to figure out. In our tests one camper took less than 10 minutes to put it up on the first try. Two shorter aluminum poles cross to support the roof while four longer poles join to the roof poles at the top of the tent and slide into pegs at the ground. The tent roof is made of polyester taffeta treated with a DWR (durable water repellent) coating.
Seasons-wise & climate-wise, there is no doubt this is a summer camping tent and most suitable for warm weather camping. See the picture below to realize why; the ceiling is all mesh and you would not feel great in a cool environment. The sloped wall screen house simply has slanting walls. This design can sometimes mean that the entire footprint of the screen house isn’t very usable. If you can’t set your screen house on perfectly level ground, the skirt will make up the difference in height and keep insects out.
This REI shelter has a standard amount of room (100 square feet) with a peak height of seven feet, so lots of room for tall people. I thought so too until I discovered the magic of screen houses and how much they can up-level ozark trail chairs your average camping trip. One mad idea often begets another, and that is how this $34.95 purchase came about. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere in the blog, I’m getting married in Joshua Tree on August 2nd, outdoors.
Don’t forget that mesh walls come in various thicknesses as well, which can influence airflow and visibility outside the tent. However, beware of tents with sloped wall designs. Take your time and compare it to the previously mentioned Alvantor Instant Screen House which has a similar build. One feature this screen house has that I haven’t seen elsewhere is an entry mat placed over the thresholds to prevent tripping over the edge of the tent. The Wenzel Magnetic Screen House is a lightweight and large screen shelter with two magnetic doors.
