The brand decided to enter the world of mountain biking with one of their first sponsored athletes during the BMX era, Eric Carter, who had converted to mountain biking after a successful BMX career. Some freehubs are designed for tool-free removal from the wheel, while others require specialist tools. DT Swiss’s freehubs need a complete set of different tools to disassemble them, whereas you can get at some others with just a standard set of Allen keys. Although some wheelsets only have a single freehub option available, it’s increasingly common to be able to buy a separate freehub to match your wheels and allow you to switch standards.
Kent Bikes has been in business since 1892, and their experience shows in the quality of their products. It really depends on your budget, riding style, and preferences. If you’re looking for a hyper bike quality bike that will last, Mongoose is a good choice. There’s so much buzz surrounding hybrid bikes these days that manufacturers pitch them as the be-all, end-all of multi-terrain biking.
We have a dedicated, and detailed, article on how to service a freehub. Although it’s one of the more fiddly bike maintenance tasks, it’s not beyond the hyper bike capabilities of a home mechanic. DT Swiss freehubs are all now built on the ratchet system and come with between 18 and 54 points of engagement.
There is a simple mechanism that allows the stand to be tilted in different directions so that you can choose how much support you feel you need to your legs. This is especially important when you are going down hill and you don’t want to be putting any pressure on your muscles. Having the ability to adjust your bike in this way is a big plus and one that more people are hyper bike taking advantage of on a daily basis. Many shops are now offering these stands as part of a bundle of mountain bike accessories for those who want to make their bikes more comfortable. The Hyper Havoc FS mountain bike is 26″ in size, it is a 21 speed mountain bike, with Shimono gear shifters. Before I get into all the cons with the bike, I will first tell about the pros.
Aggressive geometry and aero tubing combine to create a race-winning bike. For those who like the steep stuff, the SLC is our all-out climber. If you like it rough; the G2 is the perfect start to any gravel or all-road build. Just like the other bikes in Liv’s hybrid range, the Alight 2 disc features an ALUXX aluminum frame, which is Giant’s (Liv’s Parent brand) signature alloy across their range of hybrids.
For some freehubs, you can buy replacement ratchets that let you alter the number of points of engagement. The freehub is an extension of the right-hand side of the rear wheel’s hub. If you always swap like for like when replacing your bike’s cassette, you may not need to worry much about freehub compatibility, but that too is trickier than it seems.
I don’t blame the bike for this but the seller and manufacturer. Even when we tried contacting both the seller and manufacturer they didn’t want to just ship a part out, they instead wanted us to ship the entire thing back and gives us a whole new bike set. That would have been fine, but we had already assembled most of the mountain bike and we didn’t want to repack the entire thing just to ship it out and get another mountain bike that we would have to reassemble. The number of sprockets on the cassette is often referred to as its speeds; for example, 11-speed and 12-speed for the latest road bike groupsets and mountain bike groupsets have 11 or 12 cogs on the back. Mongoose bike frames are also lightweight and durable, but they’re not as expensive as hyper bike frames.
Ultimately the true decision is your when it comes to whether or not you choose to buy this bike, but as a mountain bike there are far better options out there. Campagnolo uses a single freehub design for 9-, 10-, 11- and 12-speed cassettes, while the newest N3W freehub also accepts 13-speed cassettes. Like Shimano/SRAM, there’s differential spline spacing to ensure that you can only mount the individual cassette sprockets in one position and one orientation. There’s also a different lock ring, incompatible with Shimano’s, used to secure the cassette on the freehub.
