Once set up, the screen walls offer bug-free lounging, while two large doors provide easy entry in the front and at the back. And when it’s time to pack up, the Coleman Back Home Instant Screenhouse can be stored and transported in the included easy-pull wheeled carry bag, which fits inside most cars. Enjoy the fresh coleman ice chest air without the bugs when you’re camping in a Coleman® Evanston™ Screened 8 Tent. It’s designed for simple setup and easy carrying—perfect for car campers and long camping trips. The tent even has a screened porch where you can sleep on warm, dry nights. If it rains, the tent is designed to hold up to the weather.
The Evanston is a solid dome design with a fairly low profile and heavily slanted walls. It also comes pre-installed with guylines and a full set of totally adequate stakes, so this tent passed our wind tests quite well. Thanks to all of the open mesh and optional coleman ice chest window covers, it is extremely well-ventilated with or without the rainfly. A screen tent acts like a tent that you would sleep in, with a few differences. The walls are see-through, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of natural views without the nuisance of bugs.
The carefree room is a very thick material and looks like it will stand up well. There are gaps in the corners where it meets with the rv and awning. We will play around with it and see if we can eliminate them. I do with the flaps to close the windows were on the inside but it isn’t a huge issue.
Keeping its size and weight low will make it one of the best screen tents for camping. Unfortunately, the “quick set up” tents generally lean toward the heavier side, so you may have to sacrifice ease of use if weight is a concern. When you want a simple tent that will give you coverage during your backyard cookout, look for a large pop-up tent that has a 13X13 foot spread. A roof vent is also ideal, as it resists pooling when you have rainstorms.
It will shelter a standard-size picnic table, but with little room to spare. In early March, we took our second trip to the oceanside Sycamore Canyon Campground (PDF) near Oxnard, California. A later check of the weather at nearby Point Mugu Naval Air Station confirmed top recorded wind gusts of 40 miles per hour. We later used the shelters on group trips at Wheeler Gorge Campground near Ojai, California, and at the La Jolla group campsite at Point Mugu, as well as on a trip to the El Mirage Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert. Our favorite of the eight canopy tents we tested, the REI Co-op Screen House Shelter ticks all those boxes.
There are many benefits of a screen tent, the most apparent being keeping those unwanted guests out of your hair–quite literally. Whether you are heading to the beach for the day or perhaps tailgating before a game, pop-up tents are the best to keep you protected from the elements.
