Floor space is enough for two queen size inflatable beds. I have a family of 5, 2 adults, 3 kids (ages 7, 7 and 9) and we have enough room. The last time I personally used the tent, I had a cot, a camp chair, and grand daughter’s air mattress and sleeping ozark trail screen house bag and a small plastic camp table inside. Still had plenty of room to move around and store my and my granddaughter’s gear (she was about 14 then). It performed admirably at first, being easy to set up and re-stow in the provided ruck-sack.
Again, Ozark Trail tents are mainly fair weather camping tents (so you won’t be hiking into the backcountry with them) which means weight and packed size aren’t a big priority. The Ozark Trail 9 Person Cabin shares the same shortcomings as the other discount cabins found in the Ozark Trail lineup, most notably being its weather protection and durability. We also don’t recommend this tent for high winds because although all the poles are steel, Ozark Trail uses a thin-walled alloy that can bend under stress and plastic hubs that we wouldn’t trust in serious storms. As far as fairweather shelters go, however, this one may be the best value in terms of livability for your money.
To set up the 8-foot-by-6-foot sun shelter, spread the canopy out on the ground with the pole sleeves facing up. Each section of pole is permanently connected to the other by elastic cord, eliminating the time needed to figure out which piece goes where. And the steel poles of my WeatherMaster tent are still holding up fine. Also, my steel wall poles were showing signs of rust even though I did my best to dry them before packing. Also, the poles of my Ozark Trail tent were not color-coded, they were just all black, while my WeatherMaster 10-Person Tent had a little bit of color-coding, like this red band for the middle wall pole. And while my WeatherMaster 10-Person Tent doesn’t have super big windows, 2 of the windows are these huge, angled windows for ventilation on rainy days instead. On the other hand, my Coleman 10-Person Instant Tent has these humongous windows on every wall of the tent, which is great for hot day ventilation.
The shock corded poles are fiberglass and never failed. I initially bought the Ozark Trail Family Dome tent because of its price and I had had some success and enjoyment with the Ozark Trail brand in the past. This is one of your cheapest dollars-per-square-foot options out there. Later had poles break in another section after water got down inside a pole joint and froze breaking it. I then purchased several of the coghlan’s tent pole repair kits and made myself a new set of poles. These poles are MUCH more durable, have been through similar abuse and have not broke.
The zippers remained free throughout, but the main entry inside zipper pull failed, leaving it operable, if not a little awkward to start from the inside. The stakes provided are aluminum wire and bend easily in packed dirt, so you will end up buying sturdier replacements for most types of camping. The mesh on one window mildewed from wet storage, and several small holes resulted, making that window unusable midway through the second summer.
You’ll want to properly inspect the tent when you receive it to ensure it wasn’t damaged in transit (this is a common complaint), and take care not to overstress the material when pitching it and taking it back down. No Ozark Trail tent is perfect, but as far as full-size family camping tents go, this is the one to beat. So yes, the Ozark Trail is an absolute steal of a deal if you’re into the bell tent design, but there are a few shortcomings you’ll want to be aware of if you’re considering it. First, although it’s a great space to hang in good weather, the yurt’s ventilation struggles to keep up in serious heat.
