Another point on the comfort level is the shape of the bit you sit on (the bum rest). Instead of it being completely flat, it curves downwards as it heads towards the back of your knees. This means that it follows the contour of your legs better and is much more comfortable than other chairs we have tried. They have a mesh back on them so that they don’t give you a sweaty back in the hot weather. The back support section has bungee cord integrated into it, and they really do offer a high level of support and comfort.
So while you can still find last year’s model, we really were impressed by this year’s design. Stop hunting for the best products and deals—get our expert scoop on secret sales and discounts, gift ideas for everyone and can’t-miss products. Throughout 2018, the Coleman bungee chairs have been used all over the UK, and have been used in preference to other chairs we have access to. Without mentioning any names, 2 of the same brand had to be returned due to the pivot points breaking, and another chair was sent back because the stitching had failed. However, some testers said they felt like they might hurt themselves as they figured out how to operate the chair. Testers recommended this chair as a quasi-dining chair, especially if you know you’ll use the table to rest snacks and drinks, and even prepped cooking ingredients next to the fire.
They fold just like a movie director’s chair—hence the name—but usually don’t pack down vertically. The flatpack style of chair doesn’t lend itself well to extreme portability. That being said, if you’re mostly car camping out of your truck or driving to a friend’s BBQ, you’ll love the extra size and support these chairs offer. We especially like the Infinity zero gravity chair, which reclines nearly flat if you’d rather stare at the clouds than at your fellow campers.
Rated to 260 pounds, this lightweight chair could carry its own weight on any trail — although other users found it better for concerts, days at the park, or throwing in the beach bag. Overall, the Kijaro Dual Lock was the best value for the quality, ease of use, and comfort available out of all the camp chairs we reviewed. All our recommended picks have weight capacities, which are worth considering if you’re larger-bodied, or if you plan to camp with children or pets who might end up in your lap. Chairs that are rated for less weight can sometimes feel unstable, while heftier seats tend to feel more durable and stable. Rocking chairs are a popular style of chair for camper vans and RVs, where you’re often set up on even surfaces.
Our winners were all constructed with quality materials and designed to handle uneven terrain, bear weight evenly and securely, and withstand wear and tear from a variety of climates and ecosystems. Therefore, materials and frame coleman chair constructions were high on our list of priorities. While some of our choices were certainly not weight-conscious (Our Heavy-Duty pick weighs 13 pounds!), we did consider weight (our lightweight choice is only 1.1 pounds!).
They went on to share that “the carrying pouch is sturdy, the chairs are wide and comfy, and the cup holder [and] side cooler [are] so convenient.” The 4-pound, steel-construction REI chair has an attached carry strap, rather than a carry bag like the other chairs. After a couple of camping trips, we concluded that a strap is more convenient than a bag—quicker and easier for a kid to grab the chair and go, without parental help. The REI chair is rated to hold up to 150 pounds, the same as the L.L.Bean and Walmart chairs.
In general, for folks with bigger bodies, look for chairs that have wider seats and higher weight capacities to give you the space and support you deserve. Check the weight of the camping chair, especially if you’ll be carrying it over long distances, such as from the car to a walk-in campground or from the distant parking lot to a music festival or sporting event. Lighter chairs are generally more packable and won’t add much weight to your overall gear.
And unlike the similarly shaped Helinox Sunset above, the Eno includes a cup holder, two cargo pockets, and even a pillow for cushioning your head as you recline. REI’s Flexlite collection ranges from the light and minimalist Flexlite Air to the durable, headrest-equipped Camp Dreamer. The Flexlite Camp Boss here slots in right in the middle, combining a near-ideal mix of weight, comfort, and durability for many campers.
The carry bag is rather thin, letting you feel whatever section of the chair rests upon your back or side. At least you probably won’t be carrying it terribly far, and it’s not awful over short stretches. The chairs’ fabric has been produced from a high-quality grade polyester, the 600-Denier Oxford material coleman sleeping bag features the perfect strength to weight ratio for durability, movability and longevity. The curved arms rests allow you to sit back in the chair without leaving you feeling bolt-upright. We took into account the team’s likes and dislikes about the chairs we tried, as well as online reviews from past buyers.
The cooler itself is an easy-access zippered pouch that hangs from the bottom of the left armrest. This chair had us impressed on all ends, and with its wide availability, the Cooler Quad is a stalwart defender of Coleman’s reputation as a king of camping. But if you want something comfortable enough to watch an all-day soccer tournament and durable enough to bring back every season, we don’t think this one is a winner.
