The Schwinn Tailwind is one amongst a large number of electric bicycles available today, a segment gaining popularity due to interest in transportation alternatives to the car. But don’t expect to sit back and let the Tailwind whisk you along–the electric motor on this bike merely provides assistance; the rider still has to pedal. The front fork evens out the bumps on the pavement and the dirt.
A notable feature of this bike is its large storage and carrying capacity. It comes with a rear pannier rack and a stealthy under-seat storage compartment which allows you to store small items that you want to keep close. The Coston is Schwinn’s most expensive e-bike thanks to its superior battery power and throttle for fully electric riding. Additionally, the bike is fully equipped with fenders and a rear rack to make commuting or running errands simple and easy.
That being said, the small-ish 250W motor isn’t going to be a powerhouse on hills. The bike accelerates fine on flat ground, but you’ll definitely need to add some leg assist if you’re going to be climbing tall hills. When you’re a parent of two who works from home, this sort of quick trip to the store can happen fairly often. Normally, I’d hop in my car and zip down to the store, but this summer, I was able to stop using my car and start using my bike for almost everything. In short, think primarily about what you want to do on your e-bike, where you’re most likely to ride it, and how much you want to spend. The battery actually lasts better than the other one that I have and out performs what I would have thought it would.
We found that it doesn’t lock very securely, and riding over bumpy pavement can cause it to slip so that it loses its electrical connection. This handle also doesn’t provide enough room for your fingers when you are carrying the battery pack. Second, putting that weight over the rear wheel makes the Tailwind more likely to flip over when the bike schwinn ebike is stopped suddenly. Our test bike’s front brakes were particularly grabby, causing an end-over incident during an emergency stop. The riding position is comfortably upright but still able to lean into things off-road. It still lets you stand if you’re trying to get up a particularly steep part of a hill or over a rough section on the trail.
Available in both step-through and traditional layouts and intended to suit riders within a general height range of 5-foot-4 and 6-foot-4, the Coston seems to be largely geared toward families. Instead of a front suspension, the Coston DX has a 27.5” Alloy rigid fork, creating a stiffer ride but with better speed and power transfer. Components are MicroShift 7-speed shifters, KMC chain, and JAK 7 mechanical disc brakes with 160mm front and rear rotors. The frame is the same 6061 aluminum with internal cable routing.
