If the cold doesn’t bother you, hiking this trail in winter provides a quieter trail experience and avoids the heat and bugs ozark trail canopy present at other times of the year. Ultimately, the good design for this product was that it was sized right for what I needed, both in dimensions and weight. Not too small, but not too large (and ozark trail backpack thus wasteful) – a Goldilocks design. After all, I had to be sensitive to weight as we were required to carry our own water for 10 miles as there were no options for filtering during that stretch. I carried this daypack back n forth on a trail to the shower while camping. The bag stayed in place on my back using the sternum strap.

This roomy and practical backpack works well for a multi-day hike. I don’t make it a habit of buying my gear from Walmart, but this was a excellent purchase. I use this pack on a daily basis to carry my office clothes while I ride my bike to work and to carry light loads while out Geocaching.

Because of her small frame we had her fitted for a woman’s bag at REI and she ended up getting an REI 22-liter clearance bag. I was fitted for a 45-liter bag since I needed to carry camera equipment, extra socks, knee sleeves, and extra supplies my wife didn’t need to deal with. Exploring Missouri’s scenic Ozark backcountry is one of the best reasons to head out on the trail. The Ozark Trail Association marks and improves the trail and ensures backpacking campsites are well maintained. What’s more, the OT offers many things to see and experience for both seasoned and first-time backpackers.

But over the last few years my wife and I are into longer hikes. We hike anywhere from 3 to 4 miles at a time up to 7 miles with a goal of a 10-mile round trip day hike. This hydration compatible backpack has a connection for a water bladder built in to the ozark trail canopy design. It’s equipped with a thermal shut-down system, tip-off switch, and oxygen depletion sensors for your safety. Even if you’re camping with a group, it’s important to have a few items just for you. I did have a few inches along the edge for some clothes, a water bottle, and a headlamp, but that could have been made wider with a narrower sleeping pad. The next section along Trace Creek is an enjoyable, quiet walk in the woods. Camp at Highway DD trailhead near the section’s start or Harper Spring around the 15 mile-mark.

Bean’s Stowaway Hip Pack (4 ounces, $30), my go-to, has three compartments and a key fob. A shoulder strap pocket to hold your smart phone is a must. Gossamer Gear makes a good one that attaches to your pack with Velcro straps and features a front mesh pocket for an energy bar, lip balm and the like (large is 1.9 ounces, $22). Here’s a look at some of the small stuff that I’ve carefully selected and trail tested, and as such, can confidently recommend to you for your gear closet.
