This further increases mud clearance and also adds to the frame’s compliance, providing better control. Definitely not a versatile bike; this is designed with only CX racing in mind and makes no compromises – except for, perhaps, its two sets of bottle bosses. genesis mountain bike Versatility still pervades the frame, with downtube bottle bosses and mounts for a rear rack and mudguards. Although this bike can take on the commuting duties or a bit of cycle-touring, it is more suited to lively riding in the woods and on bridleways.
But more than that, there’s front and rear dynamo lights, so you never need worry about forgetting/neglecting to charge your lights. An internally geared hub goes a long way to weather proofing the drivetrain, as do the full housed gear cables that help stop dirt degrading your shifting performance. The Datum comes with 32c tyres, which is a bit closer to the ‘road’ end of the spectrum.
For each of the builds, there are different spec levels donated by a ‘10’ for the entry level and ’30’ for the top line. Other bikes might have the specificity to perform better in a single one of these uses, but very few bikes would be able to perform as well as the Croix de Fer in all of them. It is the combination of a vast array of mounts, a robust steel frame and wide tyre clearances that allow this bike to be such a jack of all trades. Genesis is the upmarket and more performance oriented partner brand of Ridgeback. They are best known for their UK specific, and progressive, often experimental bike designs with very high specification. As with Ridgeback, ‘UK specific’ means these bikes are made for our particular cycling conditions, instead of according to an international one-size-fits-all formula. Genesis are especially known for leading the welcome revival of steel framed bikes across several categories including 29ers, cross, road and track bikes. Almost the antithesis of the Day One, the Flyer is sublime in its simplicity. It employs easily adjustable rim brakes, a single 42×17 gear, and it has mudguards to keep the spray off.
Genesis champion themselves on built in practicalities that can be seen throughout the range, enabling their use daily across many different scenarios. As with the Day One, there are mudguards, rear pannier rack, and an internally geared rear hub for all weather dependability. A rim brake version is available in addition to the disc option and both come with Shimano Ultegra 2×11 groupsets. The maximum tyre size on bike is 28c, typical for rim brake set ups but relatively narrow for a bike with discs. But for races that are solely on roads, this should be more than adequate. The aero features of more expensive bikes are present, with cables are routed internally and the leading edges of the frame are smoothly rounded.

Part of this is down to the different frame material, but cheaper components are also a factor. A solid steel range and a smattering of aluminium and carbon models brings the brand bang up to date. 500 watt direct drive motor is quiet and capable but offers less torque and weighs more, no regen modes. Simple to operate with LED console and twist throttle only, no pedal assist or LCD…… More solid than earlier Phantom ebikes, does not fold and has reinforced battery pack supports. High end RockShox fork with lockout, upgraded pedals (that don’t fold) and hydraulic Avid DB……
Instead of butted steel tubes, the CdA (Croix de Aluminium) is built on an alloy frame and carbon fork, so it’s actually lighter than the Croix de Fer 10. Yet it retains the rack and mudguard-compatible, smooth-riding wide-tyre versatility that Genesis disc brake-equipped cross/gravel bikes are famous for. In the early 2000’s many companies were using rear mounted packs because it’s easy and cheap, they didn’t have fancy pedal assist options and the computers were also very simple or non existent. The Genesis 500 brings updated Lithium batteries that are lighter and longer lasting and a variable speed twist throttle that is fun to use. Note that when I was test riding this bike I bumped my knee on the battery when swinging my leg over the back.
