You’ve probably guessed it by now, but in order to have a better chance at addressing the two aforementioned weaknesses, we shouldn’t overlook Braun’s main competitor in the foil camp, Panasonic. I know it may be tempting to buy an inexpensive, compatible part, but trust me, it’s not worth it. I usually do this right before I shave, but it doesn’t really matter as long as you do it. Also, if it has a protective cap, try to only use it while traveling or when there’s a real risk of damaging the foils.
And speaking of models, the Series 5 50 shavers sold in Europe use a completely different name scheme. Unfortunately it was discontinued and replaced with a new braun electric shavers generation of shavers called the Series 5 50 which we’ll check out next. The station would only charge the razor, but the cleaning functionality would not work.
Dan has dabbled with electric razors most of his adult life, and his technique is based mostly on saving time. They come with the same shaving head and pretty much everything about them is the same.
Finally, I’ll address other important aspects like replacing the shaving head with the right part, finding a compatible cleaning station and getting the most out of your Braun shaver. We first tested the Panasonic Arc5 in 2015, then tried it again against our top pick, the Braun Series 7, in 2021. This top-of-the-line Panasonic shaver includes a total of five blades—a quartet of foils and a single oscillating lift-and-cut center trimmer.
Now, what I think makes choosing a Braun shaver very difficult is that there can be massive differences between the different generations of a series. I know this is an important feature for several users and I will explicitly present these models in the comparison table of each series. As you move the shaving head over the skin (always against the direction of growth), the hairs will poke through the holes in the foil and get cut by the moving blades. In 2024, the vast majority of Braun’s electric shavers that are still in production are part of a so-called Series. In 2019, we tested the S9000 Prestige (pictured), which includes a digital battery meter—a nonessential upgrade—but unlike the 9300 doesn’t come with a cleaning system. The Remington offers generally good performance, but you’ll likely find the shaving experience to be buzzier and potentially more irritating if you don’t maintain a very light touch. Building on the research and testing we’ve done for 10 years, we’ve looked into new models from competing brands that have been released, and we’re confident that the Braun line of foil shavers is the best available. And the Series 7 offers the best mix of effectiveness, features, and affordability of the line.
The price is pretty reasonable for such a simple head and you should be able to buy the set if you live in Europe or the USA. Precisely, the 190s and 170s models will require the 10B set, while the rest will work with the 11B. On top of that, the Series 1 aren’t really comfortable and can induce some razor burn if your skin is sensitive. Again, I’m not taking into consideration Braun’s travel razors which in all honesty aren’t very capable and should not be considered for regular use.
