This is referred to as the “Slack”, when riding backwards you must keep your feet positioned within the slack, if your pedals rotate too much the drivetrain will engage and your pedals will start to rotate. The smaller the slack, the harder it is to keep your pedal positioned within it while riding backwards. This means that certain tricks are harder to perform, especially those that rely on pedal pressure, for example Tire Taps.
I found I needed to keep my speed in check to keep the front wheel tracking and in control. If you want to ride trails as fast as possible, you’ll likely progress beyond the Mongoose Switchback Expert rather quickly. Experienced riders may want to upgrade by adding a dropper post to the Mongoose Switchback Expert. The frame features internal routing so you could install a dropper post yourself for about $199 or so. This is one change that could make sense for some buyers, though percentage-wise, it’s a big addition.

Williams and Popovich finished third and fourth in a photo finish in their heat along with O’Brien taking third, making it into the semis. Williams got pushed out on the third straight missing out on the transfer spot. In the second heat, a huge pile up in the first turn gave O’Brien and Popovich a clear run straight to the finish line, putting both of them in the main event.
O’Brien went on to ride an incredibly strong main event to finish with a silver medal. Payton Ridenour (Pottstown; Penn.; Mongoose Bicycles) won her quarter-final lap, but unfortunately, she finished fifth in semi, just missing out on the main event. In quarters, Lexis Colby (Surprise, Ariz.; Supercross BMX) barely got around a crash in turn one and fought hard for the rest of the lap, but would not transfer to the next round.
