These features are designed to get you to your destination faster and more efficiently, but like beach cruisers, city bikes perform best on paved streets and sidewalks. We took our single speed Chatham and 7-speed Chatham Plus all the way from Texas to Destin, Florida to test these cruisers in a true beach environment. So I have nothing bad to say about it, I would say $150 range if you’re okay with that two and a half to three and a half star, Schwinn cruisers are a great option. Beach cruiser bikes epitomize the saying that the journey is the destination. “A cruiser bike is for when comfort, not speed, is the goal,” says Jeff Shyman, founder and owner of Confederacy of Cruisers, a New Orleans bike tour company. It also doesn’t mean that the bike’s frame shape will work with a child bike seat.

With beach cruisers in particular, you’ll need a seat that mounts to the headset and moves with you as you turn the handlebars (like the Thule Yepp Nexxt Mini). If your new bike isn’t comfortable, the chance of you riding it drops exponentially. Be sure to test out your bike before you commit to it to make sure that it fits you from pedal to saddle—the last thing you want is to feel sore for a day or two after a ride. This is easier in a brick-and-mortar shop, but many places to buy bikes are online retailers. In this case, check the type of return or trial policies the retailer has to ensure you get the right product.

Some front mounted seats, like the Weeride Kangaroo, attach to the frame of the bike. With very swooped, cruiser-style bars, the bars can hit the child when you turn them. We suggest avoiding this style of front-mounted seat if you’re riding a beach cruiser. These days, most beach cruisers offer the option for gears (usually 3 or 7).
