We wisely dismounted on the steepest uphills and also walked one suicidal downhill. Besides my one crash in a deep washout, we survived the worst trail in the area and had a blast. There are some big hills which would have been a nightmare on ordinary bikes. The sense of freedom was wonderful and it was one of the best days out this year. Having not ridden Kent’s new e-bike (yet, but hopefully that changes), it’s hard for me to judge it too hard on the spec sheet alone. But for the $1,498 price, it’s at least an interesting addition to a slew of Walmart e-bikes that so far haven’t taken a shot at such higher-end (or perhaps even midlevel) markets. Speaking of steps, the step-thru frame comes in only one size but should fit most riders five feet and taller.
Electrek reports that the steel-framed Torpedo sports a 180W 24V rear hub motor with a 125Wh battery. Needless to say, it’s pedal assist, so it’s definitely a bike and not a mini e-motorbike thing. We had a great day ride from the the base near Staplehurst, covering 50 miles in a big loop via Goudhurst. There are loads of quiet lanes, interesting villages and lovely scenery. The trick is to find a friendly pub who will recharge the batteries over a leisurely lunch!

Everything was going great until I encountered a 11%, 6-degree incline. Even while pedaling and in the highest level of assist, the bike barely had enough torque to push me up the hill. At one point, I smelled burning plastic when it hit me that the smell came from the motor, which was burning hot from overuse.
