We built our up-for-anything cooler so it’ll roll right over rough terrain like it’s on a paved path. The Igloo Trailmate Cooler is a new product by Igloo that aims to bring more mobility to a large cooler. By incorporating huge wheels and an intuitive glide handle, the Trailmate turns into a very easy-to-use ice chest that can go over some pretty rough terrain. In addition to this, you will find tons of great additional features and the styling isn’t bad, either. The Igloo Trailmate Journey is a burly, wheeled cooler with a 70qt capacity. Keep 112 beverage cans cold in this cooler, which has two oversized rugged wheels, a telescoping handle, and built-in bottle openers.
In addition, it comes with an anti-skid base that helps to avoid creating scuff marks on your boat deck. One area that the Igloo Trailmate Cooler excels at is its features. There are a ton of great features that Igloo has included that makes these ice chests stand out from just about everything else on the market. Overall, this cooler crushed the trails and kept ice for days.
While we sort of wish that they would have gone with Rotomolded construction, this process would have likely greatly increased the size, weight, and cost of the cooler. You will find plenty of storage space inside the insulated area but that is only the beginning. The igloo trailmate Cooler also comes with additional storage for your non-chilled items. You will find a special dry storage bin that is perfect for your electronics, wallets, or other items that you want to stay secure and not get wet. For less sensitive items, there is also a large storage pocket directly below the dry storage bin.
As for the hardware, it is made of stainless steel which is also rust-resistant and extremely tough. In the case of the Trailmate Marine, it comes with special UV inhibitors built into the wall. They help to protect against sun damage (which can be a major concern in marine settings). You will also find an antimicrobial liner that helps to offset bacteria growth and is very easy to clean up as well.
If you are simply after an ice chest with the longest ice life and most impressive build quality (and have a very large budget), then stick to Yeti. But if you need something more mobile and plan on doing a lot of entertaining, the Trailmate should be on your list. As always, ice life is one of the most important metrics of a good cooler.
When traversing grassy fields to beach dunes or dirt roads to wooded trails-wherever your heart desires, the Igloo Trailmate will get there with ease and be the life of the part day or night. Headed to the beach, a picnic, fishing or a camping trip, the Trailmate wheeled cooler from Igloo has you covered. Igloo Coolers have always been known for their attractive price points. While they typically won’t have the level of performance of higher ends brands like Yeti, RTIC, Orca, etc., they have always struck a happy balance between cost and usability. So more realistically, aim for around 2 ½ to 3 days of ice if you fill it up 1/3 to ½ way. Since there is only one size to work with (70 quarts), we decided to vary how much ice we put inside.
For what it’s worth, this was one of our “fan favorites” among friends and family while we were conducting an ice retention test which included 25 different coolers. A quick look at the Igloo Trailmate will reveal its’ unique stance. This is not a run of the mill budget cooler yet not a roto molded cooler, it falls somewhere in between. Though at first glance the Trailmate looks like a great deal, we’re not so sure. But if wheels and features are what you’re after and a budget is what you’re on, the Igloo might be the right fit for your life.
And we have seen instances where a cooler loaded with features ends up having subpar ice performance as a result of all of these additional features. The next most notable feature is the glide handle that also doubles as a butler tray. This feature is something that you will find on very few other coolers on the market and it is a great way to stand out from the crowd while having a nifty feature. A cooler that boasts a ton of features and is ready to tackle the trail.

Filling the cooler with ½ ice is pretty extreme, however. Most people aren’t going to use this much ice as it would take up way too much valuable storage volume.
We should also add that the telescoping handle doesn’t have a smooth action — it definitely doesn’t feel high quality or built to last a decade. With no latches to mess with, the Trailmate is fairly easy to open when you igloo trailmate want some of its contents. It does require a good push down to close it all the way, but that requires less effort than many other coolers, rather a conscious thought to remember to do so before all the ice melts.
