Having made such provision (by means of an agreement to use existing car parks), it is now National Highways who are calling for a traffic assessment, given the number of people who may now choose to drive instead of public transport/active travel. Chief among National Highways’ concerns is the requirement for a more detailed traffic and transport assessment to be carried out, especially in relation to Brompton’s desire to not include any car parking spaces at its site. As part of any repair or service we check the bike to assess if any additional repairs are required. If we recommend additional work, we will provide you with a no obligation cost estimate and ask if you want to proceed or not. The only way to get people to use bikes as a commuting vehicle or walking is by making it more convenient to use a bike, not the making of 0 parking spaces. There is always a situation where a car is needed; if you are disabled, transport big and bulky items, long distances to commute, that kind of stuff.

They offer great traction when riding thanks to these small plastic raises on both sides. These little touches just add to the ease of the whole experience that you aren’t slipping on the pedals at all which if you are using it around town especially in the wet can be really helpful. We obviously don’t use this bike for long trips – anything between minutes generally. In that time it’s all very relaxed and smooth chatting as we go. The one aspect which makes it all a little strange is the super wide handlebars.
Then we’ve got the issue of separating who can, who can’t and policing that. One of the great things about the car is it allows people to chain multiple journey tasks – and we build our lives around that ability (pick up shopping on the way home, zipping off for different activities etc). So we often start out the day in the car (maybe drop kent bayside cruiser the kids off) and then we’re using it all day and want to park at destinations. This was expected and with the padded seat makes for a pleasant and easy position – like a traditional Dutch bike. If the store is too busy to complete it on the spot they will book you in at the earliest available opportunity, but this may not be the same-day.
We traditionally ride road and gravel bikes and with that comes a certain type of saddle, which if you get it right is absolutely fine. However, when you are presented with the La-z-Boy style saddle that comes as standard on the Kentfield you are spoilt with how comfortable a large padded seat can be. Here at Halfords we take pride in the bikes we design, build and sell and are happy that all of our
bikes are of the highest qualty. That’s why we offer a Limited Lifetime Guarantee on the frame and
rigid forks of all Halfords and Halfords exclusive brand’s for the original owner. On top of this, we also cover all other components on the bike for 1 year unless the manufacturer
states otherwise.
There are mounts for bottle cages, mudguards and a kickstand – all you could possible need to attach to the bike. This makes it even more practical and ready for comfortable dry riding. The brakes a mechanical disc brakes which work absolutely fine. My only concern would be the ability for the average at-home mechanic to service and fix these should they go wrong, or to perform some basic maintenance along the way.
Your Halfords colleague will give you an estimate timescale when you drop your bike off. Have a look at the information on this page to find out about our servicing, repair and
fitting options. We also offer great service
packages to help maintain your bike. I applaud the ambition but I can also understand the concern. Perhaps a compromise with a few visitor parking spaces on-site added to the access to the negotiated off-site parking for staff, will allay the highways agencies fears. Fascinating case study of the car-centric planning system.
Anyone that goes for an extreme position is wrong, 100% of the people will not be able to do 100% of the demand 100% of the time. Indeed, even though I do drive there are many jobs that are beyond reasonable commuting distance and I don’t apply for them. If you know at the interview that there is no parking then you find another reliable way to get there or you don’t accept the job. I don’t drive, so I don’t apply for jobs that I could only get to by car. If I’m visiting somewhere like that for work, I get a taxi and claim the cost back from my employer. I suspect conspiracies tend towards the small (as humans don’t last long).
Brompton is yet to respond to road.cc’s request for comment, though we have been told that the company has now provided the necessary information requested by National Highways, addressing the traffic body’s objections. We have been very impressed and happy with the Kentfield and it offers that easy Sunday coffee stop bike ride on an awesome looking ride. I gauge practicality from a standpoint that when I take it out the box, how much more work do I need to do, and how many things do I need to change? The only addition was some plug-on universal mudguards that I attached.
