Tall “stick-shift” derailleur gear shift levers mounted on the frame top-tube imitated the gearshift levers of popular muscle cars of the day, while many banana-seat cycles were fitted with tall chromed sissy bar passenger backrests at the rear of the seat. Other divisions were purchased and added to the Huffman stable of companies, including Gerry Baby Products (Denver), Washington Inventory Service (San Diego), Raleigh Bicycle USA (Kent, WA), and True Temper Garden Products (Pennsylvania). Tires were a slight issue due to riding the bike on trails that are littered with debris and sharp objects that may cause frustration when they get lodged into your tire.
In 1966, Huffman introduced a new long-wheelbase bicycle frame called the Rail. The new frame was approximately 4″ to 5″ longer than previous models. In 1968, in an effort to market a children’s bicycle with an automotive theme, Huffman designers added a car-type steering wheel in place of handlebars to the Rail frame, which became the Huffy Wheel.
While tires were a normal wear-and-tear thing (as the bike was ridden nearly daily over the span of time I had it, as long as the weather was good), the bike started having other issues. One of the first issues I had with this bike was a flat tire after my grandfather massively overinflated (and blew) a tire with his air compressor. Whenever I shelved the 1987 Free Spirit Pinnacle bike due to constant tire issues, my uncle was kind enough to give me his Huffy Superia. If I can recall correctly, they did a group buy with other family members on a bunch of mountain bikes (the Superia) and they rarely rode theirs. And that’s especially true if you need a bike for a downhill bike park experience.
You want a bike that’s good, reliable and which holds up in the long run so you are not dumping a bunch of money down the drain fixing broken parts and worse yet your body because of catastrophic bike failure. It’s a huge issue for those with small budgets, true, but if you are serious about mountain biking and your safety, you want more than Huffy bikes. So, don’t ever rely on cheap mountain bikes especially for this kind of world cup riding. You will find models like the Huffy mountain bikes in stores like Walmart. And while they say this is a mountain bike, you will be quite unimpressed with the features offered by this unit. Unlike expensive mountain bikes that are built around the idea of durability, cheap mountain bikes are nothing like that.
In 1970 Huffman deleted their three-bar frame and went to a two-bar Rail frame, eventually adding additional two-tone fade paint jobs along with Persons striped seats. Since these are inexpensive, they were created from low quality materials. And while that may not seem like a huge problem at first, it is an issue when you push it beyond its limits. You want a bike that can hold huffy bikes up to the abuse and one that does maintain a good stability as you ride faster and go bigger on the jumps and other bike park features. After all, sometimes you are going at breakneck high speeds, and your aerodynamics can be affected by a bike that’s unstable and squirms all over the trail. Even if cheap mountain bikes seem like a worthwhile investment, they really aren’t.
After it became apparent that continued U.S. production of low-cost, mass-market bicycles was no longer viable, Huffy had bicycles built by plants in Mexico and China, starting in 1999.[16] The relationship with the Mexican plant was severed shortly thereafter. In federal bankruptcy court in Dayton, Ohio, in 2004, Huffy’s assets were turned over to its Chinese creditors. In 2004, Huffy sold its Huffy Sports division to Russell Corporation.
In cosmetically great condition, not tested thoroughly but kickstand works and the wheels don’t seem to have any problem moving.
